How to add subtitles to DVD?

Here is small guide how to add subtitles to DVD – you got some movie file (divx, avi, mov, mpg…), you got some subtitles (sub, srt,…), and you want burn this movie and subtitles to DVD.

Servers upgraded

Now database server is running FreeBSD 8.0, after installing it didn’t boot, so it takes couple of hours to fix this issue. Hopefully there won’t be anymore downtime like this.

XML-RPC URL changed

We are changing main URL for XML-RPC server to http://api.opensubtitles.org/xml-rpc, but don’t worry, old URL will work until end of 2009.

OS is going to freeze features

I’d like to finish some “small” things on OS website development and XML-RPC, so development will be in feature freeze. If you have some features, which you really like to see, write them to comments.

Opensubtitles.org is now hosted on 4 servers (1 db server, 3 webservers). We changed also handling of sessions to separate memcached daemon.

We thought it should be nice to have some extra value for users, who make content. So if you uploaded more than 100 subtitles you get site without any advertisement and so on.

Beware of asia scam mail

I recently (and my friends also) got mail from Asia Network offering some internet services like registration of domains and Internet brand (WTF). It was scam.

How to watch movies with subtitles?

Everything you have to do is rename subtitle file according movie file. So if you have “movie.avi” your subtitles must be located in same directory and renamed to “movie.srt”. Now open movie in your favourite video player and enjoy!

Users favourite subtitles available

Time to time I check trac for new tickets, and I found interesting one (actually, it was send by user and I put it in trac), where was suggestion about creating favourite subtitles for user. This means, you can mark any subtitles and add it to you favourites.

PHP/Perl hashing source codes available

Advanced PHP/Perl programmers could write some nice scripts, which can download right subtitles from OpenSubtitles without doing anything – just running that script.

Improved subtitles reporting system

We needed better subtitles reporting system, so user should change info like release name, uploader comment or even uploader. I coded it and this is all now possible with new reporting system, so you can try that.

OpenSubtitles.com testing

Don’t be scared, when you will see in URL OpenSubtitles.com – we are testing something, don’t update bookmarks, OpenSubtitles.org is still correct URL.

Servers upgrade summary

Some of you might have already noticed that opensubtitles.org didn’t work for past couple of days correctly. This was due to the move to a new hardware and new operating system version of our servers at collocation.
